Differences and Similarities Between AWD and 4WD

AWD vs 4WD

When they contact our Cook dealership, some drivers ask us to explain AWD vs 4WD. While both systems are designed to provide extra grip on the roadway, they’re not the same. For that reason, it’s not appropriate to use “four-wheel drive” and “all-wheel drive” or their respective abbreviations interchangeably.

About AWD

As you probably inferred from its name, an all-wheel drive system sends power to all four of a car’s tires. Full-time and part-time AWD systems are available in the marketplace. A full-time AWD system is always engaged.

Part-time AWD systems usually operate in two-wheel drive mode, but they automatically switch to AWD mode when they sense extra traction is needed. Vehicles like the Dodge Challenger and the Dodge Durango are offered with all-wheel drive.

A Look at 4WD

If you’re looking for new or used cars for sale, we encourage you to look through our car inventory. As you explore the vehicles on our lot, you’ll notice that models like the RAM 1500, the RAM 2500, and the Jeep® Grand Cherokee L are outfitted with four-wheel drive.

Motorists who visit our Aberdeen, MD RAM dealership and tell us they enjoy off-roading typically need a vehicle with 4WD. Four-wheel drive systems are heavier than their AWD brethren, which is why they’re usually found on larger SUVs and trucks. In addition to being heavier, 4WD systems are more capable than AWD alternatives. Given their greater capabilities, 4WD systems are generally the right choice for people who like to explore the outdoors.

Unlike AWD systems which don’t require any input from a driver, motorists must engage their 4WD systems. A lot of 4WD systems have both low and high ranges. The low setting delivers the maximum traction that you’d want in an off-road setting or when you’re rock crawling. If the roads are snowy, icy, or covered with gravel or loose sand, you’ll most likely want to use the high setting.
